Joe Biden for President - A fighter for Indian Country & our Indigenous LGBTQ+ Community

Diné Equality, the largest Indigenous LGBTQ+ advocacy organization in the country announces our official endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for President of the United States. Donald Trump and Mike Pence continue to divide the country, have ushered in an economic recession, and failed to properly respond to the critical needs of Sovereign Nations during this coronavirus pandemic. It is imperative Indian Country vote for a sane, experienced, and inclusive leader like Vice President Joe Biden.

In a press release, Diné Equality founder, Alray Nelson said,

“Joe Biden is the leader our tribal communities and our country needs at this moment in history. He has a strong record of defending and fighting for LGBTQ+ equality, even when it was unpopular. The Vice President has pushed our country forward and we need to have his back. This November, the stakes could not be higher. Our LGBTQ+ relatives are vulnerable, we face discrimination and violence every day. This is because we simply want to be who we are. We need to ensure he is the next President of the United States and we urge Indian Country to do the same.”

Diné Equality is working alongside tribal lawmakers to introduce inclusive legislation that will protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and two-spirit communities from hate crimes and bigotry during these uncertain times post-COVID19. It is imperative that we support the candidates who share our core values and will be our champions. Our organization is organizing the Native American vote and will work alongside Sovereign Nations to ensure turnout numbers significantly increase this November - compared to 2016.

Diné teachings tell us that both sexes are important to the survival & perpetuation of our people. At one time, our people also acknowledged a third or multiple genders in our society— who are often called the nádleehí. The imposition of modern democracy has led to our loss of memory about the inclusion of women & our LGBTQ relatives in nation-building.

We are changing the narrative because our LGBTQ+ relatives have always been sacred.
